The tools is a great way to get to know your site the way Google sees it.  In the interface you will see a menu comprising of Overview, Diagnostics, Statistics, Links, Sitemaps and Tools.  On the Overview Page itself you will see when Google last accessed your homepage (crawl) and whether pages in your site have been indexed (added to its memory cache).
